A clever and harmonious hybrid of melodies of traditional inspiration and folk rhythm

Romain Malagnoux, born and raised in France, has now been residing in Quebec for eight years. In 2009, he travelled to Mali, Africa. Inspired by the work and talent of Bassékou Kouyaté, he began learning to play the djeli n’goni, a small african guitar and the ancestre of the banjo. When he was working voluntarily at the Festival au Désert de Tombouctou, he by chance met with Bassékou Kouyaté himself, who invited him over… for tea!

Bassékou introduced Romain to his son Moustafa Kouyaté. The chemistry between the two musicians operated immediately. The result of their exchanges an album titled “Les frontières imaginaires” (The imaginary boundaries) was created. The album reveals itself as a clever and harmonious hybrid of melodies of traditional inspiration and folk rhythm.
